Kalawao County Criminal Court Cases
Kalawao County criminal court cases do not sit with a local county clerk. Hawaii places Kalawao and Molokai in the Second Judicial Circuit. Molokai District Court handles misdemeanors, petty misdemeanors, violations, traffic matters, and other cases within district jurisdiction. Circuit Court handles felonies, with its files centered at Hoapili Hale in Wailuku. Hawaii has no municipal court tier, so a searcher should not look for a Kalawao city court or town docket.
The Hawaii Judiciary is the custodian of the court file. The case record begins when a complaint, information, or indictment is filed and then grows as hearings, motions, pleas, orders, and judgments enter the docket. The police report remains with the agency that made the report, and the HCJDC criminal-history record is a separate repository product. For the filed charge and judicial result, the court docket is the right starting point.
No Kalawao County Case Clerk
The phrase “county court records” can mislead in Kalawao. There is no ordinary Kalawao County clerk, courthouse counter, prosecutor's office, or local electronic portal. The useful question is which Second Circuit venue heard the matter. A lower-level case associated with the peninsula may be filed through Molokai District Court. A Kalawao felony case belongs on the Circuit Court path centered in Wailuku.

Bring the case number and a clear description of the document sought. Multiple files, microfilm, and off-site records can take more time.

Those listings matter because Kalaupapa is not a practical court-record counter, even when the incident occurred within Kalawao County.

Kalawao Court Search Traps
Two search rules cause many false dead ends. First, a filing-date query allows only a 60-day range. Split a long span into smaller searches. Second, migrated case numbers must be converted to the format expected by eCourt Kōkua. Old IDs require the circuit digit, the case type, and enough leading zeroes to make a 12-character identifier. New criminal IDs combine a circuit digit, a court letter, a two-character case type, a year, and a seven-digit sequence. A sample Second Circuit format is 2CPC-17-0000001.
If a Kalawao County district case predates August 2012, do not treat an empty online result as proof that no file exists. Public documents display a PDF icon when an online copy is available. The online charge is $3 per document or ten cents per page, whichever is greater, and electronic certification adds $2. Reading Kalawao Criminal Case Codes
Short codes make a docket compact, but they can hide the meaning of a result. Hawaii's official court code list is the best aid. DCRF means a felony complaint and DCRM a misdemeanor complaint. FA, FB, and FC mark felony classes, while PM means petty misdemeanor. These are case or offense labels, not findings of guilt.

Read the code beside its date, count, and docket entry. A deferred plea is not the same as an immediate dismissal. Likewise, one count can end differently from another in the same Kalawao County criminal case.
How a Kalawao Criminal Case Moves
After an acting agency documents an incident, a prosecutor may file a complaint or seek an information or indictment. The court then presents the charge at arraignment and records the plea. Kalawao Case PDFs and Federal Files
A PDF icon means that a public document can be bought online. No icon can mean the filing is not available electronically, not that it never existed. Some records are counter-only, and new filings can need several business days to enter the system. Kalawao Case Record Access and Restrictions
Hawaii court records are generally public, but access is not absolute. The Uniform Information Practices Act supports government openness while protecting privacy and legitimate government functions. Hawaii Court Records Rules define public, confidential, sealed, and redacted material. Electronic views block Social Security numbers, dates of birth, home addresses, and phone numbers. Juvenile information, protected victim data, sealed cases, in-camera items, and confidential events may be withheld or masked.
A missing event may therefore reflect a legal restriction, an older paper file, or an entry delay. It does not prove that the event did not happen. Ask the custodian whether a record exists, whether only the online copy is limited, and what rule supports any denial or redaction. An agency denial under UIPA should state its authority and review route, which may include the Hawaii Office of Information Practices.
Expungement and court confidentiality are related but distinct. HCJDC removes qualifying arrest information under HRS §831-3.2. Since July 1, 2025, HCJDC transmits eligible orders to the Judiciary for its consideration, but that does not turn repository relief into automatic public-court erasure. A request for a police narrative belongs with the agency that created it, not the court. A request for an adult conviction abstract belongs with HCJDC or eCrim. Keeping those channels distinct reduces delay and helps the custodian identify the right Kalawao County record.
